LEIGH MATTHEWS
LEIGH MATTHEWS has had many AFL trading cards issued to commemorate his illustrious Australian Football career with the Hawthorn Hawks.
MATTHEWS played 332 Games and kicked 915 Goals for Hawthorn from 1969 to 1985. He was voted Australian Football Player of the Century by his peers, which is an acknowledgement of the Highest Order.
He played the Game in a totally courageous and fearless manner, and possessed great judgement and anticipation. In an era when Hawthorn were a powerhouse and had some of the greatest Australian Football Players (many of these Players AFL trading cards are in Stock at qualityafltradingcards.com) of their era, Matthews won 8 Hawthorn Club Best & Fairest Player Awards.
Leigh Matthews was Captain of Hawthorn from 1981-1985, and played in the Premiership Teams of 1971, 1976, 1978, and 1983.
He was very solidly built and scrupulously made the ball his object, with the nickname of “Lethal”, which was more about his uncanny and relentless Goal Kicking ability than the physical manner in which he played the game.
After his Highly Decorated Playing Career, Matthews transferred to Coaching Ranks with the Collingwood Magpies where he guided the Club to a Premiership in 1990, ending a Premiership drought of 32 years. Matthews transferred to the Brisbane Lions where he Coached 3 Premiership Teams in succession from 2001- 2003, only to be thwarted by Port Adelaide for 4 in a row in 2004 (the all-time record).
There are also a number of AFL trading cards issued for Matthews Coaching Career, and his name will be immortalised by the naming of the Leigh Matthews Medal, which is awarded to the Best Australian football player each year , as voted by all Players in the AFLPA.
Leigh Matthews remains heavily involved with Australian Football, with a Regular Role as a Television Commentator, and Game Analyst, with very knowledgeable and interesting reviews of Club Tactics and Players Performance , which are superior to most other analysts.
